In 1955, Arthur Pack donated land to the Presbyterian church that became the Ghost Ranch property we know today. One-hundred acres of that land was set aside around 1968 to be used solely for agricultural purposes and to support local ranchers. At the time, most ranchers had herds of 10-15 cattle and had to travel very far to sell cattle at auction. The original purpose of the facility was to provide a backgrounding feedlot and marketing opportunity for local ranchers. The Sangre de Cristo Livestock Corporation was established to manage the facility at Abiquiu along with several other local feedlot operations.

The New Mexico Producers and Marketing Association (formerly known as the New Mexico Producers and Marketing Cooperative) was first established in 1970 as the initial cattle and feed purchase agency for the Sangre de Cristo Livestock Corporation. The pens and scale were built to support the marketing program that still continues to this day.

In the late 1970s, bankruptcy caused the New Mexico Producers and Marketing Cooperative to separate from the Sangre de Cristo Livestock Corporation, which included the other feedlot facilities, and sell half the pens at the Abiquiu facility. Activity continued to wind down into the 1980s, but marketing opportunities continued as they did when the facility was first established.

In recent years the Cooperative was resurrected and re-established as the New Mexico Producers and Marketing Association. We currently host marketing opportunities, regulatory testing (Trichomonas) and breeding soundness events for bulls, and are working with local partners to establish heifer and bull development programs.
